William W. “Bill” Harsey Jr., born in 1955 in western Oregon, comes from a family with deep-rooted forestry traditions that shaped his steadfast work ethic and love of the craft. After graduating with a bachelor's degree from the University of Oregon in 1979, he dedicated himself to the art of knife making, harmoniously combining raw functionality with refined aesthetics in his designs. He is credited with working with such renowned personalities as Colonel Rex Applegate and the companies Gerber Legendary Blades, Chris Reeve Knives and Spartan Blades. For them he designed award-winning models, including the Applegate-Fairbairn Combat Folder and The Green Beret Knife. Harsey's designs, distinguished by their precision craftsmanship and deep understanding of users' needs, have won wide acclaim from professionals and collectors alike around the world.
Spartan Blades - In 2008, in a historic barn in Aberdeen, North Carolina, two retired U.S. Army Special Forces non-commissioned officers Curtis Iovito and Mark Carey combined more than 40 years of military experience to found Spartan Blades, a company specializing in the production of the highest quality knives for both military and civilian users. Reflecting their relentless pursuit of perfection, each knife is carefully designed and made from the finest materials, such as CPM MagnaCut steel and titanium. Through collaboration with renowned designers, including William W. Harsey Jr., Spartan Blades has won numerous industry awards, including the prestigious title of “American Made Knife of the Year ” for the Spartan-Harsey Folder model in 2016. In 2019, as a result of its merger with KA-BAR Knives, Spartan Blades expanded its production capabilities, introducing three product lines: Gold, Silver and Bronze, tailored to meet the diverse needs of customers. Today, Spartan Blades remains synonymous with excellence in the world of knives, combining military precision with superior craftsmanship.
CPM MagnaCut - powder stainless steel produced using the Crucible® Particle Metallurgy(CPM) process hardened to 60.5-62.5 HRC. The high content of vanadium 4.0% (V), molybdenum 2.0% (Mo) and niobium 2.0% (Nb) guarantees accuracy and purity unmatched by more “conventional” steels. Designed and developed specifically for blade production by Larrin Thomas, it meets all the requirements of knife enthusiasts. With CPM MagnaCut succeeded in creating a steel that combines the unique properties of knife steels like no other. The result is a blade material that offers a remarkable balance of wear resistance, strength and corrosion resistance. There is no other steel on the world market today that offers a comparable combination of superior properties. This exceptional steel is produced at Crucible® Industries' U.S. steel mills.
Vacuum & Cryogenic - the steel has undergone a specialized heat treatment process involving two key steps. Vacuum Heat Treatment - the steel is quenched in a vacuum environment, which minimizes oxidation and provides more uniform metal properties. This process increases the strength and structural integrity of the steel. Double Deep Cryogenic Treatment Once heated, the steel is rapidly cooled to extremely low temperatures, often below -148°F (-100°C). This transformation transforms residual austenite into martensite, significantly increasing hardness, wear resistance and overall durability. Through these advanced processes, the steel delivers exceptional performance, offering both razor-sharp edge retention and remarkable blade durability.
PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) - The resistance of the blade surface and cutting edge is enhanced by a vacuum deposition method used to deposit thin films by condensing an evaporated form of the desired material onto the surface of the workpiece. The coating method involves a purely physical process such as high-temperature vacuum evaporation followed by condensation. The applied coating has a very high hardness which significantly increases the resistance of the blade to rust and abrasive wear.
Blade - with Spear Point profile , coated with black PVD coating. The generous belly extends the length of the cutting edge in relation to the length of the blade. The solid thickness of the blade combined with a high flat grind (Flat Grind) gives excellent cutting properties combined with high durability. Bronze washers assist in opening the blade with a double-sided peg in the wedge (dual thumb studs). To maintain full control of the blade, an upper jimping, notched thumb rest is made on the back of the wedge. The whole is locked with the proven and popular frame lock.
Handle - made of solid titanium 6AL4V has beveled edges of the covers, eliminating sharp points. The surface is decorated with an artistic engraving of “Memento Mori”. The so-called open-backed design without the typical backspacer, attached to each other with titanium spacer sleeves for easy cleaning. The simple but solid construction guarantees many years of use. There are notches (jimping) on the edges of the Handle, improving grip security. The axis of the pivot is decorated with a designer screw, and all fasteners (screws, clip) are anodized bronze. A double-sided (right/left) titanium clip, decorated with an arrow motif, allows the knife to be carried in tip-up position. Above the clip is a hole designed for threading a safety cord.
